I am. So I'm organising the Bristol Coddywomple on Sunday 26th July.


The what? The Bristol Coddywomple! An ambling celebration of street performance, bringing entertainment to your neighbourhood.

About the event

The Bristol Coddywomple will take place from 6pm to 8pm on Sunday 26th July 2020.


Synchronised across Bristol, participating performers will follow pre-mapped and publicised routes near their homes, entertaining their neighbours. Audiences will watch from their windows and step outside to interact at a safe distance with the entertainers from their doorsteps and front yards. 

About the project

This is a pilot project. Participant performers will be pioneers in an exciting experiment to re-imagine a resilient future for us all. If successful, there is interest to take the project further.


Currently we have no funds for fees but are researching cashless tipping apps as a direct way for audiences to show their appreciation. And we are looking into funding streams to support performers who would not otherwise be able to take part. 


The entertainment industry is in crisis and many organisations are coming together to re-imagine our immediate and long-term futures. We hope to create a model that may be able to replace lost income for performers for the remainder of the season and beyond. The results will be fed back to various industry bodies and used to research how socially-distanced performance could be possible in our communities.


So, this project does 3 things.

It provides an outlet for many brilliant local performers who are frustrated at not being able to do what they do best this summer. We get to shout about what we do and show how necessary live performing arts are to our mental wellbeing.

It brings amazing performance directly to people's homes, connecting entertainers with their neighbourhoods, enhancing the sense of community that's been one of the positive features of this lockdown period.

It enables us to be proactive in influencing the future of our sector.

Coddywompling Head Office

The Coddywompling head office consists of: Lead Producer Gwen Hales, Assistant Producer Lucy Heard, and we are supported by two street arts consultants, Amy Rose and Paschale Straiton.

About you, the Coddywomplers

Each Coddywompling team will consist of the performer(s) and a steward.

All performers need their own Public Liability Insurance – this mandatory.

Any performance group needs to consist of people who share a social bubble.

Coddywomplers must be over 18.

Coddywomplers will be asked to sign up to a Code of Conduct around hygiene and social distancing. This Code will be based on Health and Safety documents drawn up by NASA-UK. The event publicity will include guidelines for audiences. 


Prior to the event, all stewards will be given training on how to interact with audiences, manage automobile traffic, and briefing on issues specific to this new form.


Stewards are necessary to ensure safety, to answer questions from members of the public, to promote the Tipjar account, and be a friendly buddy for performers. Ideally they will be people who live in the same household as, or share a social bubble with, the performer(s). We can source stewards if needed.


We will work with teams to map appropriate routes. These will be advertised on the Coddywomple website and our social media pages and we'll be helping teams to publicise themselves locally.


We will liaise with all teams to ensure that performances are compliant with the Code of Conduct and are happy to advise on ways to make static performances more mobile or indoor performances suitable for the outdoor environment.
